Philippe Calia uses photography, video and text to illustrate his own readings of the city of Bombay/Mumbai in an ongoing series. This body of work stems from years of observations of the city’s visual grammar, seemingly aimless strolls in its streets, conversations with the people met along the way, but also encounters with numerous kinds of literature produced around it. The following is an essay written by Philippe himself, which accompanied the show and encapsulates the sentiments that fuelled and sprung from the creation of The Second Law, his solo exhibition at TARQ in Mumbai between 27 February and 29 March, 2025.

'Thieves' Market' by Areez Katki

A very special piece from the New Zealand-based artist Areez Katki's recent body of work is Thieves' Market, which we were lucky enough to see in person at TARQ's booth at the India Art Fair 2024 in New Delhi. Thieves Market is a tapestry or frieze made up of several fragments that reference lost, excavated, and even stolen, objects and artefacts that are now mostly housed in glass cases in European museums, such as the Louvre and the British Museum. Each fragment is handwoven in the traditional Zoroastrian toran beadwork technique using Czech glass beads that the artist inherited from his maternal great-grandmother.
